Near the end of my book, “To Be With You,” I mentioned MrX—a few times, in fact. But I never explained. It really would have been going off on a tangent at that point in the book and I didn’t want to go into it then.
But now…I have time and I think it’s worth sharing.
In May, 2019, Wright and I communicated via text message. I was asking him about the name “Wright Walker” and, amazingly, he responded, after a long period of radio silence (no messages from him).
We were sparring about his name. I said I really thought it was a nice name…even if he made it up. He responded, “I made it up.” (Is he lying or is he telling the truth?)
Later in the same conversation I told him I call him DBA for “doing business as” Wright Walker.
He said, “My name is Mr. X.”
At first I liked DBA better, but the more I thought about it the more I liked Mr X. It’s really much more interesting, and then there’s the fact that he called himself that! That’s just crazy! But I, graphic designer that I am, removed the space between the lowercase r and the uppercase X, to create a more compact “monogram.” And the Groucho Marx disguise, well, it is just perfect, don’t you think?… (All disguise and no substance…)
